Has “effort” in its profound sense any validity in the religious life? Is the religious life opposite to the secular life? Life must satisfy “me” — the Infinite Transcendence must constrict itself into my mortal cup of clay. Hence I cannot live virtuously. Effort is needed to the critical point when effortlessness prevails in living religiously.
